Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing throughout the world. Since its founding in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 200,000 homes for families in need.
Habitat for Humanity York County was founded by Miles Freeman in 1985. Mr. Freeman has been associated with Habitat since he worked on the Koinonia community in Georgia in 1969. Koinonia served as the basis for founding of Habitat for Humanity International. Freeman was asked to start a Habitat chapter in Maine and he has been involved with the local affiliate since its inception.

To work towards the elimination of poverty housing and homelessness in York County and to stir the hearts and minds of others to take action on this issue by adhering to the following principles:
- Give witness to Jesus Christ's Gospel by working with God's people in need to create a better habitat in which to live and work.
- Welcome everyone who shares a concern for the poorly sheltered to this ecumenical Christian ministry including people of all faiths, ages, races, walks of life and cultures.
- Formulate partnerships as an essential centerpiece of our work since we believe that when we join together our differences give way to factors that unite us.
- Organize at the grass-roots level, operating only where local people initiate interest and are involved in our work.
- Build and renovate houses not for people in need but rather with people in need as equal partners as we aspire to empower families and assist them in developing self sufficiency.
- Build and renovate houses that are affordable through various partnerships including volunteer workers, generous donors and prayer partners.
- Conduct a nondiscriminatory homeowner selection process from the lower income family applicants in our county based on need, willingness to work and ability to repay a mortgage.
- Provide support in mutual partnership with the selected families as they work to fulfill their commitments including "sweat equity" labor on their house and/or the houses of others.
- Transfer ownership of our houses to the selected families at no profit via no interest mortgages based on the biblical teaching of Exodus 22:25.
- Ensure efficient stewardship and use of our resources, including donations and homeowner mortgage repayments, which are deposited into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" to pay for the construction of other houses.
- Accept government funds only for the acquisition of streets, utilities, land, houses needing renovation, or for administrative expenses, provided that those funds do not compromise Habitat principles. No government funding will be accepted to pay for housing construction costs.
Our Families
Habitat for Humanity York County provides a hand-up, not a hand-out for families in desperate need of improved living conditions. Our homeowners invest 400 hours of sweat equity to help build their own home. Houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, zero interest mortgages.
For Habitat for Humanity York County families, home ownership means more than just having a roof over their heads. Our program allows families the opportunity to live in York County, create a better future for their children, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty through affordable home ownership. |
