The Family Support Committee selects families who meet the following three criteria:
- Need for Adequate Housing
- Ability to Pay for the Habitat Home
- Willingness to Partner with Habitat

Need is based on the inadequacy of current housing which can include but is not limited to the following:
- Unsafe, badly in need of repair, overcrowded, structural problems, inadequate electrical or plumbing
- Family may have been denied conventional mortgage
- Family is cost burdened ( rent plus utilities, phones not included, is more than 30% of monthly income)
- Current home is considered unstable if it is unsuitable for raising a family
- Your relative need for housing will be compared to those who have submitted an application

- Combined income of applicants must meet Maine Income Guidelines
- Must have sufficient income to pay the mortgage (taxes, insurance, and maintenance fund) without becoming debt burdened
- Typical mortgage payment is about $650 a month
- Must have evidence of stable income which would not include temporary income
- Must be able to pay a down payment of $1,000 at closing

Partner family must agree to the following :
- Provide all application information in a timely manner
- Submit a plan to meet the sweat equity requirements (2 applicant family 400 hours, single applicant 300 hours)
- Work cooperatively with Habitat volunteers to fulfil sweat equity hours
- Participate in and complete required educational sessions
- Pay monthly mortgage on time without default
- Notify HfHYC of any change in family composition or contract information
- Notify HfHYC of loss of income
- Maintain the home and property
- Volunteer on other Habitat projects
- Be a Habitat for Humanity Ambassador
