What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing thoughout the world. Since its founding in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 200,000 homes for families in need.

Habitat for Humanity York County was founded by Miles Freeman in 1985. Mr. Freeman has been associated with Habitat since he worked on the Koinonia community in Georgia in 1969. Koinonia served as the basis for founding of Habitat for Humanity International. Freeman was asked to start a Habitat chapter in Maine and he has been involved with the local affiliate since its inception.

Habitat for Humanity York County is one of 2,100 active affiliates in 92 countries. The affiliate operates within the principles developed by Habitat for Humanity International, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and receives guidance from the Habitat Northeast Regional Support Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

While we can explain the history of Habitat for Humanity, the true story of Habitat is best told through the eyes of partner families.
