Habitat for Humanity York County is Seeking Land Acquisitions

As the need for decent, affordable housing continues to grow in York County,
Habitat has a new need – land.
One of the most frequent questions we’re asked is: where do we get land to build houses on?

Habitat for Humanity York County has been building affordable homes in York County since 1985. When Habitat York County first began creating affordable homeownership opportunities, land was more affordable in southern Maine. As the cost of land and housing has sky rocketed acquiring land has become one of Habitat York County's greatest challenges.

We have historically relied on a variety of sources to acquire land to build affordable homes for families. Habitat has received donations of land from generous community members, been donated town owned land, purchased land affordably from towns and local land owners. If you would like to partner with Habitat to purchase or donate land please reach out to us.

As our organization continues to grow Habitat is also also looking to become partners with local builders and developers who have an affordable housing component of their developments. This partnership benefits both parties – the developer can fulfill their obligation to provide affordable housing for the community, and Habitat for Humanity gets access to land that may not have otherwise been available or affordable.

We accept land through:
• Full donation. Habitat will cover related expenses to make your gift a reality. You get the tax write-off.
• Partial donation. Habitat pays a percentage of the value of the land and you donate the remaining value which is tax-deductible.
• Outright purchase. In some cases, Habitat will purchase the land at full value.

• Partnership. Partner with Habitat to create affordable housing in your development.

In 2022 a local Cape Porpoise resident, donated land to Habitat for Humanity York County that supported the creation of two affordable homes. The photo above was taken at the home dedication for the first Cape Porpoise home. The land donor was able to give the homebuyers the key to their new home.
